Staying Cool in Cypress, TX is Patriotic.
This July, Blue Label Services wants to celebrate the birth of our nation (America doesn’t look a day over 245) by celebrating the history of one of its most influential inventors, and one to whom we owe our very livelihood! Willis Haviland Carrier is known as “The Father of Modern HVAC”, and his discovery truly supports the notion that necessity breeds invention! A perfectly chilled environment in the heat of a Cypress, TX summer is something we almost take for granted. But it wasn’t always that way! Blue Label Services presents: A brief history of HVAC!
Modern HVAC as we know it today started in Brooklyn, in the 1920’s, when the humidity of an East Coast summer caused the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographic and Publishing Company to seek out a solution to help dehumidify the area around their printing machines. Born in 1876, and a graduate of Cornell University, American engineer Willis Carrier was hired to find a way to mitigate the company’s business disaster (ruined paper and runny ink.) Carrier didn’t set out to cool the people. And, at the time, many people believed that “controlling” external conditions went “against God’s will.” Carrier sought simply to solve a problem for the sake of industry. He created a large fan that blew air over steam coils filled with cold water. The humidity would condense on the coils, and produce dry, cooled air. Imagine the aha moment when the system didn’t just keep the paper cool and dry, but cooled and kept the employees comfortable, too!
Carrier was energized by his discovery (and likely by his cool, dehumidified environs) and, in the spirit of comfortable, increased productivity, submitted drawings for what would become the first modern air-conditioning system. A new standard was thereby created, that a true air-conditioner would control temperature, humidity, air circulation and ventilation, while cleansing the air (all standards the solutions at Blue Label still uphold today!)
Though World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II all had their various effects on bringing Carrier’s invention to the masses, the increase in year-round productivity revolutionized American life and even helped to inspire the great migration to the Sunbelt. Eventually, in the 1950’s, HVAC systems became staples in American homes (to keep cool, and to keep up with the Jones’s) and we at Blue Label are sure glad they did!
You can view Carrier’s first practical centrifugal refrigeration compressor from 1922 at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, but if you want to see how far Carrier’s vision has come, you can give us a call! Blue Label Services always goes the extra mile to deliver an experience that far exceeds expectations. We’ll meet all of your HVAC needs, in the spirit of Willis Carrier.
