Things to Consider When Selecting an AC Unit for the Space

Size matters when it comes to the size of the air conditioning unit you need for your home or business. The size of the unit you need will depend on the size of your home or building and the location in which your unit will be installed. There are several things to consider when selecting an air conditioning unit for the space that you want to keep cool throughout the hot summer months. Read on to find out what those are and how to determine them.

Is Your AC Unit the Right Size?

Most air conditioning units are between 5,000 BTUs in 12,500 BTUs. For example, a small bedroom or a small office can’t get away with having eight 5,000 BTU air conditioning unit, but an open floor plan in a home or business will need closer to 12,500 BTUs.

Air conditioners are normally rated in two ways, which are the level of energy efficiency or their cooling capacity. When it comes to cooling capacity, all air conditioners will be labeled with a BTUh, which stands for British Thermal Unit per hour, or BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating. The BTU of any air conditioning unit means that is the amount of energy that is going to be required to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

Things to Consider When Selecting an AC Unit for the Space

There are many things you need to know when determining the size of the unit needed  to effectively cool your home or business.

How Many BTUs Does My Unit Need To Have

The first thing to keep in mind is that an air conditioner needs at least 20 BTUs to properly cool each square foot of living space in your home. You will also need to consider things, such as the height of the ceilings in each room and how many windows there are, which will help determine how many BTUs are needed per square foot.

Location, Where the Air Conditioner Will Be Placed

You will also need to consider the location in which your air conditioner is placed and where the sun will be shining throughout the day.

For example, if you have an air conditioning unit installed on the side of your house facing west, it will have to work harder in the evening hours when the sun is at its highest. Also, consider how much shade you have available around your home or business since direct sunlight will cause your air conditioner to have to work harder to cool your space.

Square Footage of Your Room

To calculate the size of the air conditioning unit you will need, simply multiply the square footage of your home by 25. The answer you get will be the number of BTUhs that the air conditioner you purchase will need to possess to be able to cool your home efficiently and comfortably.
